FIFA Revises Calendar as Eagles Face International Windows Restrictions
By Irikefe Oghenetega Victor
FIFA has officially revised the international match calendar, reducing the number of national team windows available to the Super Eagles this year.
Under the new structure, the traditional September and October breaks have been merged into a single 16-day window running from September 21 to October 6, 2026. During this period, teams can play up to four matches.
The second and final international window of the year is scheduled for November 9 to November 17, a standard nine-day period allowing for two matches.
This change means that the Super Eagles will have only two international breaks for the remainder of 2026, instead of the usual three. The extended September-October window is expected to give head coach Éric Chelle more time to work with his squad, particularly as Nigeria begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
The revised calendar forms part of FIFA’s broader adjustment to the men’s International Match Calendar for the 2025–2030 period, aimed at reducing the frequent stop-start disruptions to the club season.
However, for the Super Eagles, the upcoming extended window will be crucial as they prepare to face Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau in their opening Group L qualifiers.
