Nigeria’s Falconets have been eliminated from the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after suffering a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the quarter-finals on Sunday in Łódź, Poland.
The match remained goalless for most of the contest until Valerin Loboa scored the decisive goal in the second minute of stoppage time. Nigeria were reduced to 10 players in the 77th minute after Kafayat Mafisere received a straight red card, and despite holding firm for long periods, the Falconets were eventually undone by the late strike.
The result brings an end to a strong campaign in which Nigeria recorded two wins, one draw and two losses, scoring 13 goals and conceding four. The Falconets began the tournament with a 2-0 loss to Spain and a 0-0 draw against China before thrashing New Caledonia 10-1 to advance from Group F. They then produced an impressive 3-0 victory over England in the Round of 16 to reach the last eight.
Although the team fell short of matching their previous final appearances in 2010 and 2014, the 2026 campaign still marked a solid showing under coach Moses Aduku. The Falconets once again demonstrated their attacking quality and resilience on the global stage.
Nigeria’s exit means their journey at this year’s tournament ends at the quarter-final stage, leaving Colombia to progress further in the competition.
