Nigeria’s Falconets thrashed New Caledonia 10-1 in their final Group F match at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup on Sunday to book a place in the Round of 16.
The dominant victory at the Stadion Miejski ŁKS in Łódź was exactly what Nigeria needed after a 2-0 defeat to Spain and a goalless draw against China. The Falconets finished second in the group with four points behind Spain and will now advance directly to the knockout stages.
Ramotalahi Kareem opened the scoring in the 17th minute and went on to complete a hat-trick with further goals in the 27th and 64th minutes. Rebecca Adegbemile scored twice (20’ and 74’), while Janet Akekoromowei netted in the 23rd minute.
Winner David, introduced at half-time, made an immediate impact with a hat-trick of her own (60’, 75’ and 90+4’), and Tosin Rafiu added another in the 70th minute. New Caledonia’s only reply came late through Joceline Kourevi in the 89th minute.
Nigeria dominated the contest with 48 attempts at goal (22 on target) and 19 corners. The Falconets finished the group stage with 10 goals scored and three conceded, while New Caledonia ended the campaign without a point.
Nigeria’s women’s U-20 team have a rich history at this tournament. They have reached the final twice, finishing as runners-up on both occasions, and remain one of only three nations alongside the United States and Brazil to have qualified for every single edition of the competition since its inception in 2002.
Attention now turns to the Round of 16, where the Falconets will face England on September 17 at 3:00 pm WAT in Bielsko-Biała. As the only African side remaining in the competition, Nigeria will look to build on this emphatic performance and continue their pursuit of a deep run at the tournament.
