Nigeria’s Falconets suffered a 2-0 defeat to Spain in their opening Group F match at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.
Spain took the lead in the 13th minute through Marisa García, who finished past the Nigerian goalkeeper. The Falconets went into half-time trailing 1-0 as head coach Moses Aduku sought to reorganise his side.
Nigeria created several attacking opportunities but struggled to convert them against a well-organised Spanish defence. Spain controlled much of the game and limited the Falconets’ attacking threat.
The European side doubled their lead in the 72nd minute through substitute Alba Cerrato, who scored six minutes after coming on to seal the victory.
The Falconets will now turn their attention to their next Group F fixture against China on Thursday, September 10, as they look to bounce back from the defeat and strengthen their chances of progressing to the knockout stage.
