Akekoromowei Shows Brilliance As Falconets Eye Knockout Spot

Irikefe Oghenetega Victor

Janet Akekoromowei announced her return to the Falconets with an impressive display as Nigeria played out a goalless draw against China in their second Group F fixture at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.

The 18-year-old Benfica forward joined the squad shortly before the encounter after missing Nigeria’s opening 2-0 loss to Spain. Despite her late arrival, Akekoromowei immediately looked dangerous in attack and created Nigeria’s first clear opening in the 17th minute.

She remained a constant threat throughout the contest, registering five attempts on goal in the 17th, 32nd, 38th, 45th and 72nd minutes. Although none found the back of the net, her movement, pace and direct approach provided Nigeria with an important attacking outlet against the Chinese defence.

Akekoromowei’s performance was particularly encouraging given that the match marked her first appearance in the tournament. Her ability to consistently find attacking positions offered the Falconets a positive attacking option ahead of their decisive final group fixture.

The forward began her development at the Asisat Oshoala Academy before making a name for herself in the Nigeria Women Football League, where she scored 13 goals in 19 appearances for Nasarawa Amazons and was named the league’s Most Valuable Player. She subsequently joined Bayelsa Queens before completing a move to Portuguese champions Benfica in July 2026.

She also represented Nigeria at the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup and has received a call-up to the senior Super Falcons, further underlining her growing profile in Nigerian women’s football.

With the Falconets now turning their attention to New Caledonia in their final Group F match on Sunday, Akekoromowei will be expected to play a prominent role as Nigeria seek the result required to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.

The Tomorrow trap: why we procrastinate and how to break free

By Irikefe Oghenetega Victor It’s 11 p.m. in Lagos, and that major project due at 9 a.m.  is staring back at you from your laptop screen. Yet somehow, the work hasn’t started. Instead, you’re rearranging your playlist to create the “perfect” study vibe, finally replying to that group chat message from last week, or falling down an unexpected rabbit hole about why ancient Roman aqueducts were such a brilliant engineering feat. The minutes slip by. The clock seems to tick louder. A quiet sense of guilt begins to creep in, but the scrolling continues. For many university students, this cycle is all too familiar , an endless tug-of-war between looming deadlines and the irresistible distractions of the digital world. You're not lazy. You're human. Procrastination isn't a willpower deficit or a time-management glitch, it's an emotional rescue mission gone sideways. Modern psychology, led by researchers like Timothy Pychyl and Fuschia Sirois, frames it clearly: procrastinati...
