AFCON 2027: Super Eagles Qualification Route

Irikefe Oghenetega Victor

Nigeria’s Super Eagles are under pressure in Group L of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers after suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau on Matchday 2.

The Super Eagles began their campaign with a 2-1 home win over Madagascar in Uyo, courtesy of debut goals, but the away loss in Bissau has left them on three points. Guinea-Bissau sit top of the group with a perfect six points following their dominant victory.

Because Tanzania have already qualified automatically as co-hosts of the 2027 tournament, only the highest-placed team among Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar will advance from the group. This means every remaining fixture carries significant weight.

Nigeria still have four matches left: a November double-header against Tanzania (home and away), an away trip to Madagascar, and a final home clash against Guinea-Bissau. To overtake the Wild Dogs, the Super Eagles will likely need to win all their remaining games and overturn the head-to-head deficit.

Guinea-Bissau hold a strong advantage with a superior goal difference and the better head-to-head record. Even if both sides finish level on points, Nigeria may need a heavy victory in the return fixture to secure qualification on head-to-head or goal difference.

The Super Eagles return to action in November against Tanzania, knowing that maximum points from those fixtures will be essential if they are to keep their AFCON 2027 hopes alive heading into the final round of matches in March.

The Tomorrow trap: why we procrastinate and how to break free

By Irikefe Oghenetega Victor It’s 11 p.m. in Lagos, and that major project due at 9 a.m.  is staring back at you from your laptop screen. Yet somehow, the work hasn’t started. Instead, you’re rearranging your playlist to create the “perfect” study vibe, finally replying to that group chat message from last week, or falling down an unexpected rabbit hole about why ancient Roman aqueducts were such a brilliant engineering feat. The minutes slip by. The clock seems to tick louder. A quiet sense of guilt begins to creep in, but the scrolling continues. For many university students, this cycle is all too familiar , an endless tug-of-war between looming deadlines and the irresistible distractions of the digital world. You're not lazy. You're human. Procrastination isn't a willpower deficit or a time-management glitch, it's an emotional rescue mission gone sideways. Modern psychology, led by researchers like Timothy Pychyl and Fuschia Sirois, frames it clearly: procrastinati...
