Zambia captain Barbra Banda and Malawi forward Temwa Chawinga have emerged as the early front-runners for the Golden Boot at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Banda currently leads the scoring charts with four goals and one assist after inspiring Zambia to a dominant 6-0 victory over Egypt in their Group C opener. The Orlando Pride striker was involved in five of Zambia’s six goals, scoring a hat-trick and converting a penalty during the second half.
Temwa Chawinga follows closely with three goals, having played a key role in Malawi’s stunning 3-2 win over defending champions Nigeria in their opening match. Both forwards failed to score in their second group games but still remain at the top of the charts.
Cameroon’s Marie Ngah Manga is third with three goals, while other notable contenders include Morocco’s Ghizlane Chebbak and Nigeria’s Asisat Oshoala. Oshoala remains a constant threat and could climb the table if Nigeria bounce back strongly in the remaining matches.
The all-time record for the most goals at a single WAFCON stands at 11, set by Nigeria’s Perpetua Nkwocha in 2010. That mark has remained unbroken for 16 years.
With the group stages still ongoing, the Golden Boot race remains wide open, but Banda and Chawinga have set an early benchmark for the rest of the tournament.
