The Federal Government of Nigeria has extended the forest guard Initiative to ten States as part of efforts to strengthen security in the country according to a statement released by the Office of the National Security Adviser.
The statement revealed that over 9,000 personnel have been recruited as the program covers states like Kaduna , Edo , Kogi states amongst others.
"The training was designed to combine their knowledge of the environment with the discipline and operational skills required to work within an organised security structure", the statement confirmed.
The recruits were drawn from communities heavily affected by kidnapping, banditry and other threats and this is due to their familiarity with forest, rivers and route connecting communities and states, according to the statement.
The forest guards will go through screening , background checks and security vetting before being recruited. The state governors also reiterate their support for execution of the forest guard Initiative in their respective states as they commend the efforts of the Security Agencies.
This initiative was launched by president Bola Tinubu in May 2025 and by December 2026 the federal government graduated over 7,000 guards after three months of training programmes.
