Super Falcons Exit WAFCON After Narrow Defeat to Cameroon

The Super Falcons of Nigeria suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Cameroon in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Casablanca on Sunday.
Cameroon’s Myriam Maéva Nyadjou scored the only goal of the contest in the 19th minute, a strike that ultimately proved decisive. Despite dominating large periods of the match and creating several chances, Nigeria were unable to find an equaliser.
Cameroon goalkeeper Michaely Bihina produced a series of important saves to preserve her side’s lead, denying the Super Falcons on multiple occasions as they pushed for a way back into the contest.
The result brings an end to Nigeria’s title defence at the continental championship. As one of the defeated quarter-finalists, the Super Falcons have also missed out on automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Only the four semi-finalists at WAFCON secure direct tickets to the global tournament. Nigeria will now enter the African play-offs alongside the other three quarter-final losers, with the winner of that route advancing to the inter-confederation play-offs for another chance to reach Brazil.
While the Super Falcons’ World Cup hopes remain alive, they now face a more difficult path to the 2027 finals after a disappointing exit from the African championship.
