The Super Falcons produced a disciplined and resilient performance to defeat Zambia 1-0 in their second Group C match at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Rabat.
Asisat Oshoala scored the decisive goal in the 9th minute, giving Nigeria an early lead that they managed to protect for the remainder of the contest. The victory revived the Super Falcons’ campaign after their opening defeat to Malawi and moved them onto three points.
The game took a dramatic turn late in the first half when central defender Oluwatosin Demehin was sent off in the 40th minute following a second yellow card after a heavy challenge on Barbra Banda. Nigeria were forced to play with 10 players for more than half the match.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, head coach Justine Madugu made important tactical adjustments. Defender Shukurat Oladipo was introduced early in the second half as the Super Falcons defended resolutely to keep a clean sheet.
The result leaves Group C finely balanced. Malawi lead with six points, while Nigeria and Zambia both sit on three points, with Egypt still on zero. Nigeria will face Egypt on Wednesday, August 5, knowing that a win would place them in a strong position to qualify for the knockout stages.
The Super Falcons now turn their full attention to the decisive clash against Egypt as they look to keep their hopes of a record-extending 11th WAFCON title and 2027 World Cup qualification alive.
