Emmanuel Uduak-Obong Esther
In the cold hands of air
Let our eyes be up
For we came with nothing
And shall return a day with nothing.
Why do we gather
What we know not its end
And call it wealth, when
Humans out there can hardly feed?
Why do we lay down
Riches of lust and bitter sorrows
Like tomorrow we have,
Sleeping peacefully in our sweating palms?
The heart can bid farewell at anytime
The flesh will decay when breath is lost
The soul will become nothing, but
The spirit will live or die by works here.
At sunrise,
Dreams are awakened by burning ambition
And by a single breath.
But at noon, dreams beget a bulging belly.
At dusk,
Retirement calls out loud
But at night,
All sleep and forget all.
Strive not to live and die here
Care more for there we see not
For what is life, if you enjoy now
And sleep in tears and torment forever?
Remember, in
The sixty-six books of the Lord
Solomon wrote,
There is time for everything.
Be conscious of your stay here
You are only but a sojourner
On the day of your call
I tell you: naked you will go, as naked you came.
