Ex-Super Falcons Warns FG Ahead of WAFCON 2026

Irikefe Oghenetega Victor

Former Nigeria women’s national team players have warned that the Federal Government’s failure to fulfil promises made to the Super Falcons could undermine the team’s bid to win a record-extending 11th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title in Morocco and qualify for the next FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Members of the United Ex-Super Falcons Worldwide, at a recent meeting in Chicago, United States, expressed concern that the Federal Government has yet to fulfil its promise of $100,000, land allocations and other rewards for each player, one year after the team’s success.

United States-based former Super Falcons player Patience Avre said the uncertainty surrounding the unfulfilled promises had affected the morale of the players currently preparing for the tournament in Morocco. “The United Ex-Super Falcons Worldwide feel the pain the present players are facing. They may be training ahead of the WAFCON, but complaints over the unfulfilled promises are getting louder,” she said.

Avre added that the former players were making a passionate appeal to the Federal Government on behalf of the current squad because many ex-Super Falcons players had also been poorly treated in the past. “The truth is that Nigeria should have been among the world’s leading women’s football nations, but poor motivation over the years has been a major setback,” she said.

According to the National Sports Commission, the delay in presenting the Super Falcons with their cash rewards, land documents and national honours certificates was due to the postponement of the team’s camping programme ahead of the 2026 WAFCON. The government maintains that the promises will be fully honoured, pointing to similar packages recently fulfilled for the men’s Super Eagles and D’Tigress women’s basketball team.

The situation has raised questions about the priorities of those responsible for managing and promoting Nigerian women’s football, especially given the Super Falcons’ status as Africa’s most successful women’s national team and reigning continental champions.

The Tomorrow trap: why we procrastinate and how to break free

By Irikefe Oghenetega Victor It’s 11 p.m. in Lagos, and that major project due at 9 a.m.  is staring back at you from your laptop screen. Yet somehow, the work hasn’t started. Instead, you’re rearranging your playlist to create the “perfect” study vibe, finally replying to that group chat message from last week, or falling down an unexpected rabbit hole about why ancient Roman aqueducts were such a brilliant engineering feat. The minutes slip by. The clock seems to tick louder. A quiet sense of guilt begins to creep in, but the scrolling continues. For many university students, this cycle is all too familiar , an endless tug-of-war between looming deadlines and the irresistible distractions of the digital world. You're not lazy. You're human. Procrastination isn't a willpower deficit or a time-management glitch, it's an emotional rescue mission gone sideways. Modern psychology, led by researchers like Timothy Pychyl and Fuschia Sirois, frames it clearly: procrastinati...
