Senegal Win U-17 AFCON Title After Dramatic Penalty Shootout Victory
Senegal were crowned champions of the Total Energies CAF Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco 2026, after defeating Tanzania 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in the final on Tuesday at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat yesterday.
Tanzania took a surprise lead in the 7th minute through Hamis Chenga, but Senegal equalised in the 64th minute when Ibrahima Dione tapped home from close range after the Tanzanian goalkeeper failed to hold a free-kick. Neither side could find a winner in normal time, leading to a tense penalty shootout.
Senegal showed superior composure from the spot, converting all four of their penalties through Faye, Sadio, Dione, and Thior. Tanzania scored twice but missed two attempts, handing Senegal their second U-17 AFCON title.
The Young Lions of Teranga displayed remarkable resilience throughout the tournament, recovering from tough moments to lift the trophy. Coach Seydina Issa Aidara praised his team’s mental strength, saying they remained humble and focused until the very end.
For Tanzania, the final marked a historic achievement as they reached their first U-17 AFCON final and qualified for the FIFA U-17 World Cup. Despite the defeat, the Serengeti Boys earned pride for East African football with their impressive campaign.
