Team Nigeria won the gold medal in the mixed 4x400m relay at the 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, on Thursday.
The quartet of Ezekiel Asuquo, Toheebat Jimoh, Victor Sampson, and Patience Okon-George clocked a 42.94 seconds to finish ahead of Liberia and host nation Ghana. The performance also made Nigeria the first women’s team to run under 43 seconds at the African Championships.
This latest triumph further cements Nigeria’s dominance in relay events. The country remains the most successful nation in African Championships relay history, with 12 gold medals since 1989. Nigeria has now won gold consecutively in this event in 2018, 2022, 2024, and 2026.
The victory adds to Tobi Amusan’s gold in the women’s 100m hurdles and boosts Nigeria’s medal tally as the championships continue in Accra. It also comes on the back of the women’s 4x400m team winning gold at the 2024 edition in Douala, Cameroon.
This performance reinforces Nigeria’s reputation as a continental powerhouse in athletics, particularly in relay races.
