Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has delivered a mixed verdict on Femi Azeez’s impressive debut despite the Millwall winger scoring a brace in Nigeria’s 2-0 Unity Cup semi-final win over Zimbabwe.
Azeez opened the scoring in the 5th minute and added a second in the 62nd minute to send the Super Eagles into the final. However, Chelle was far from fully satisfied with the 24-year-old’s overall performance.
Speaking after the match, Chelle said:
“The first objective was that he was supposed to run a lot today… The second thing was to make high pressure during 90 minutes. They did not.
So now we have to analyze Azeez’s performance specifically. Also, he scored two goals, congratulations to him. But he also lost a lot of balls technically, so I'm not happy.”
The French coach added that while Azeez won the ball back several times, there were moments he failed to recover it properly. When asked if the debutant had done enough to earn a place in the squads for upcoming friendlies against Poland and Portugal, Chelle replied that the decision would depend on his tactical plans and mood at the time of final selection.
Azeez’s brace was still enough to earn him Man of the Match honours as Nigeria booked their place in the Unity Cup final.
