Millwall winger Femi Azeez made a dream debut for the Super Eagles, scoring a brace as Nigeria defeated Zimbabwe 2-0 in their opening match of the 2026 Unity Cup at The Valley, London on Tuesday.
The 22-year-old wasted no time making an impact, firing Nigeria ahead with a powerful left-footed strike in the 5th minute. He then sealed the victory with his second goal in the 62nd minute, calmly finishing off a swift counter-attack assisted by Terem Moffi.
Coach Eric Chelle handed several debutants starting roles, including goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, defenders Chibueze Oputa, Kenneth Igboke, and Chibuike Nwaiwu, with Terem Moffi captaining the side. The team showed strong defensive organisation, especially in the second half when Zimbabwe pushed forward.
Nigeria, the defending champions, will now face the winner of the Jamaica vs India semi-final match to be played on Wednesday in the Unity Cup final on May 30 at The Valley.
Azeez’s impressive debut performance has given Chelle a major boost as he continues to assess new talents ahead of bigger assignments later in the year.
