Awoniyi Scores Brace as Nottingham Forest Stun Chelsea 3-1

Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi scored a brilliant brace as Nottingham Forest defeated Chelsea 3-1 in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge on Monday, May 4, 2026.

Awoniyi opened the scoring in just the 2nd minute with a clinical finish and added his second goal in the 52nd minute to put Forest firmly in control. Igor Jesus scored the third goal for the visitors as they produced a superb away performance to stun the Blues.

The result marked Chelsea’s sixth consecutive Premier League defeat, a dismal run that has left them stranded in ninth place. According to reports from Sky Sports and BBC Sport, the loss has now made it mathematically impossible for Chelsea to finish in the top five, effectively ending their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League next season. Manager Enzo Maresca came under heavy criticism for his team’s poor form and defensive frailties at home.

For Nottingham Forest, the victory was a huge boost in their battle to avoid relegation. The win took them further away from the drop zone and was described by The Athletic as one of their most impressive results of the 2025/26 campaign.

Awoniyi’s brace took his Premier League goal tally to 11 for the season, making him Nottingham Forest’s top scorer and underlining his importance to the club’s survival bid this term. His clinical finishing and hold-up play earned him Man of the Match honours and have been widely praised as a timely reminder of his quality following a difficult spell with injuries earlier in the season.
