Galatasaray striker and Super Eagles star Victor Osimhen has been named the 2026 Milliyet Footballer of the Year at the 72nd annual Milliyet Sports Awards, one of Turkey’s most prestigious sporting honours.
The Nigerian forward was recognised for his dominant performances throughout 2025, a year in which he helped Galatasaray achieve a domestic double. Osimhen’s explosive form saw him terrorise defences after his permanent move from Napoli, making him the first Nigerian to win this coveted award, often referred to as the “Oscars of Turkish sports.”
Osimhen was unable to attend the ceremony in person as he continues to recover from arm surgery following a fracture sustained earlier this season. His Galatasaray teammate, goalkeeper Uğurcan Çakır, accepted the award on his behalf. Çakır described Osimhen as “a valuable footballer and a good person,” adding jokingly, “Next year, I’ll try to win this award myself.”
In a heartfelt video message played at the event, Osimhen expressed his gratitude:
“Thank you for the award. I want to thank everyone. Thank you to my club Galatasaray, my fans, my teammates, my president, and my coach. I hope to return soon. Thank you.”
Osimhen’s award is a direct reflection of his remarkable 2025 campaign. He scored an impressive 26 goals and provided 4 assists in 30 Süper Lig appearances, added 6 goals in 7 UEFA Europa League matches, and netted 5 goals in the Turkish Cup. His form has carried into the 2025/26 season, where, before his injury, he had already registered 12 goals and 4 assists in 19 league games, plus a stunning 7 goals and 3 assists in 10 UEFA Champions League appearances.
