Nigeria’s Under-18 and Under-20 men’s handball teams emerged as champions of the IHF Trophy Africa Zone 3 tournament after dominant performances in the finals held in Lomé, Togo.
The U18 team, coached by Abdulhakim Yakubu, cruised to victory with a commanding 32–19 win over Ivory Coast. In the U20 category, the side led by Coach David Emmanuel defeated Benin Republic 39–29, establishing early dominance with a 22–16 halftime lead before maintaining their intensity to seal the title.
Nigeria stole the show over the weekend, delivering impressive displays that highlighted their regional supremacy in youth handball. Both teams showcased strong attacking play, solid defence, and tactical discipline throughout the competition.
By winning the Zone 3 title, both the U18 and U20 teams have qualified to represent the zone at the IHF Trophy Africa Continental Phase later this year, where they will face the best teams from across the continent.
The double triumph is a major boost for Nigerian handball and reflects the growing investment in youth development by the National Sports Commission. The successes underline Nigeria’s rising status as a powerhouse in African youth handball.
