At least three people have reportedly been killed and several others injured after armed bandits attacked Jikamshi town in Musawa Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening at about 6:10 p.m. when many residents were preparing to break their 21st Ramadan fast. According to reports, the gunmen opened fire recklessly causing panic among residents who ran for safety.
Some of the victims who sustained injuries were quickly taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers also broke into several shops and stole goods worth millions of naira before leaving the area.
As of the time of reporting, government officials and the police had not released an official statement regarding the incident. All efforts made to reach the police spokesperson in the state, DSP Abubakar Sadiq, were unsuccessful.
Banditry continues to pose a serious security challenge in Katsina State and other parts of Nigeria’s North-West region, where armed groups often carry out attacks on rural communities, resulting in killings, kidnappings, and destruction of property.
Security forces have in recent times intensified operations against bandit groups in the region in an effort to restore peace and stability in the state.
