Abbas Olalekan, the Local Government Inspector (LGI) for Abeokuta South, appeared in Isabo Magistrates’ Court charged with conspiracy and attempting to cause an abortion following the death of NYSC corps member Victoria Ariyo, reportedly from pregnancy complications.
Police Prosecutor Assistant Superintendent Lawrence Olu-Balogun told the court the incident had shocked the local community. Sources said Olalekan and Ariyo had a personal relationship, which may have contributed to the pregnancy and complications.
Olalekan pleaded not guilty. His lawyer, Bunmi Adelabu, requested bail, citing his right to be considered innocent until proven guilty. Magistrate A. K. Araba granted bail of ₦500,000 with two sureties, one a blood relative and the other gainfully employed. Olalekan will remain in custody until the bail conditions are met.
NYSC Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, said the agency was deeply saddened and confirmed an internal review is ongoing. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and pray for the peaceful rest of her soul,” the statement read.
The court has adjourned the case until April 14, 2026 for further hearing.
