Trabzonspor defender Chibuike Nwaiwu has been called up to replace injured Fulham centre-back Calvin Bassey in the Super Eagles squad for the March 2026 international friendlies against Iran and Jordan in Antalya, Turkey.
The late change comes after Bassey was ruled out on Wednesday with a back injury sustained during Fulham’s 3-1 Premier League win over Burnley last weekend. The 26-year-old will remain in London for further assessment and rehabilitation, leaving the Super Eagles short-handed in central defence.
Nwaiwu, 22, who can operate as a centre-back or defensive midfielder, earns his maiden call-up following impressive performances in the Turkish league this season. The former Enyimba International FC player brings versatility and youthful energy to coach Éric Chelle’s backline.
With only three recognised centre-backs now available, Chelle moved quickly to strengthen the squad. The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed Nwaiwu’s inclusion on their official social media platforms as the team continues preparations in Antalya with 22 players.
Nigeria face Iran on Friday, March 27, before taking on Jordan next Tuesday, March 31. Historically, the two sides have met only twice at senior level, with Nigeria recording one win and one draw. Nwaiwu’s surprise call-up gives the Super Eagles much-needed defensive cover and offers the young talent a golden opportunity to impress on the international stage.
