The National Universities Commission has reconstituted its Committee on Degree Mills to tackle the growing menace of illegal universities in Nigeria.
Abdullahi Ribadu, the executive secretary inaugurated the committee and warned that degree mills pose a serious threat to the credibility of academic qualifications in the country.
The committee, chaired by NUC Director of Inspection and Monitoring , Justina Emerole , is tasked with identifying and investigating illegal institutions, gathering evidence for prosecution, and verifying university affiliation claims.
It will also collaborate with sister agencies including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, the Department of State Services, and the Nigeria Police Force to shut down illegal institutions and prosecute offenders.
The committee will also drive public awareness campaigns and recommend stronger regulatory policies to curb the activities of degree mills across the country.
