Nigeria's senior women's basketball team, D'Tigress, have received their national honours and official title documents for residential houses in Abuja, as the Federal Government fulfilled its pledge following their historic win of the fifth consecutive FIBA Women's AfroBasket title in 2025.
The presentation ceremony took place in Lyon, France, on March 16, 2026, during the team's participation in the 2026 FIBA Women's World Cup Qualifiers. National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade, along with other officials, personally handed over the documents to the players and technical crew.
Each player and member of the technical staff was conferred with the prestigious Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) national honour and awarded certificates for houses in Abuja in fulfillment of the president's announcement shortly after their victory in 2025, which also included cash rewards equivalent to $100,000 per player and $50,000 for coaches and technical staff.
While the honours and housing documents were delivered promptly, Chairman Dikko assured the team that the monetary component is in its final approval stage and will be disbursed into their bank accounts very soon.The recognition comes at a crucial moment, boosting team morale as D'Tigress prepare to conclude their World Cup qualifying campaign and gear up for the 2026 FIBA Women's World Cup finals in Berlin, Germany.
