The Department of Mass Communication at Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Ikorodu, partners with Dataphyte Academy to train 300-level students in data journalism and data visualization.
According to a press release issued by the department and signed by the Course Representative Oshuniran Sheriff Ola, the intensive two-day training took place on May 21 and 22, 2026, at the university’s ICT Centre.
The programme equipped students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in data-driven storytelling, infographics, data visualization, and the full data journalism workflow, from sourcing and verification to analysis and presentation using real-world datasets.
Dr Zannu Prosper, Head of Department, said the training was organised in response to the growing demand for data-literate journalists in the modern media landscape. Lead facilitator Mr. Kehinde Ogunyale from Dataphyte Academy emphasised the importance of mastering data interpretation and visual communication.
Dr Steve Anu’ Adesemoye, the course lecturer, described the skills as a “power multiplier,” stating that they enable journalists to transform complex data into compelling stories that drive decisions and national development. At the end of the programme, Dataphyte Academy received an Award of Excellence while Dr Alpha Ebole (Director of ICT) and Arc. Oluwagbemiga Odeniran (Director of Works and Services) were honoured for their support.
The partnership is expected to continue as both institutions work towards strengthening data journalism capacity in Nigeria’s digital media space.
