Nigeria’s U-20 women’s national team, the Falconets, have qualified for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland after edging out Malawi 3-2 on aggregate in the final qualifying round.
Despite losing the second leg 2-1 away to Malawi on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, the Falconets advanced after a 2-0 victory in the first leg on May 2 at Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State.
In the first leg, Nigeria took the lead through an own goal by Malawi’s Maureen Kenneth in the 46th minute, before Kindness Ifeanyi added a second goal in the 57th minute. In the return leg, Faith Chimzimu scored twice for Malawi (9th and 56th minutes), but Oscar Precious pulled one back for Nigeria in the 62nd minute.
The Falconets, coached by Moses Aduku, showed great resilience to hold on to their aggregate lead despite Malawi’s spirited fightback in the second leg. This qualification marks Nigeria’s 12th consecutive appearance at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, underlining their status as one of Africa’s most consistent teams at youth level.
The 2026 tournament will be held in Poland in September, and the Falconets will now begin preparations for what promises to be a tough competition. Nigeria has a proud history at the U-20 Women’s World Cup, having reached the final in 2010 and 2014, and consistently advancing to the knockout stages in previous editions.
