The crisis rocking the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries deepened on Wednesday as Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and several governorship aspirants across the country withdrew from their races, citing party unity, political stability and alleged irregularities in the primary process.
Fubara, in a statement, said his decision to step aside from the Rivers governorship contest followed consultations with supporters, political associates and family members. He said the move was necessary to ensure peace and unity in the state, insisting that his withdrawal was not out of fear or weakness. The governor also thanked his loyalists for their support throughout the political struggle.
The development came amid reports that many of Fubara’s loyalists contesting for National and State Assembly tickets were disqualified from the APC primaries, while aspirants linked to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, gained dominance in the process. Efforts by APC governors to secure support for Fubara reportedly failed as political agreements linked to President Bola Tinubu allegedly weakened the governor’s position within the party.
Elsewhere, former Rivers APC governorship candidate Tonye Cole, former Minister of Transportation Saidu Alkali in Gombe, and other aspirants in Taraba, Bauchi and Oyo states also withdrew from their races over alleged irregularities, imposition of candidates and lack of confidence in the primary process.
Meanwhile, APC stakeholders in states including Lagos, Ekiti and Anambra submitted petitions alleging violence, voter suppression, falsification of results and interference by party leaders during the primaries. The controversies have continued to generate tension within the ruling party ahead of the governorship elections.
