Nigeria’s star hurdler Tobi Amusan claimed the country’s first gold medal at the 2026 African Athletics Championships with a dominant victory in the women’s 100m hurdles final in Accra, Ghana, on Wednesday, May 13, 2026.
Amusan, the world record holder, powered to victory in a championship record time of 12.83 seconds, securing her third consecutive African title in the event. She had previously won gold in Asaba 2018 and Mauritius 2022.
The 29-year-old led from start to finish, dominating both the heats and semi-finals before producing a commanding performance in the final. Her compatriot, US-based hurdler Adaobi Tabugbo, finished strongly to take bronze, marking her first individual senior medal for Nigeria. Ashley Miller of South Africa prevented and Nigerian 1-2 finish by claiming silver.
Amusan’s gold medal win has boosted Nigeria’s medal hopes at the championships and further cements her status as Africa’s undisputed queen of the hurdles.
Following this success, the double world champion is expected to shift focus to the 2026 Diamond League season as she continues her preparations for major international competitions.
