The Lagos State Government has released 43 inmates from correctional centres as part of renewed efforts to decongest facilities and improve the criminal justice system.
The release, approved by Babajide Sanwo-Olu, was granted under the prerogative of mercy after recommendations from the state advisory council. Beneficiaries included inmates considered for their good conduct, health conditions, and length of time already spent in custody.
Officials said the move is part of a broader strategy to tackle overcrowding in correctional centres and ensure a more efficient justice process. It also follows previous exercises, highlighting the government’s continued focus on reforming the system.
To complement this, the state has introduced measures to accelerate trials, including the provision of buses to the Nigerian Correctional Service to ease the movement of inmates to and from courts, reducing delays caused by logistics.
The government is also investing in the renovation of correctional facilities and has called for increased state participation in prison management, with the aim of improving living conditions, safeguarding inmates’ rights, and promoting effective rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
