FIFA has officially approved goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo’s change of international allegiance from England to Nigeria, making the 24-year-old immediately eligible to represent the Super Eagles.
The former Arsenal academy product, born in Camden, London to Nigerian parents on September 9, 2001, had previously represented England at youth levels. His switch was confirmed on FIFA’s Change of Association portal, opening the door for him to compete for a place in the senior national team.
Standing at 1.98m–1.99m, Okonkwo is currently enjoying an impressive 2025/26 season with Wrexham in the English Championship, where he has kept multiple clean sheets and established himself as one of the standout goalkeepers in the division. He left Arsenal permanently in 2024 after several loan spells.
The development presents Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle with a fresh headache in goalkeeper selection. Okonkwo will now compete with the likes of Stanley Nwabali, Francis Uzoho, Maduka Okoye, Amas Obasogie, and Adebayo Adeleye for the number one jersey. Many of the current options have struggled to convince consistently in recent matches.
Okonkwo’s eligibility significantly strengthens Nigeria’s goalkeeping department, especially with several keepers battling injuries or inconsistent form. The tall shot-stopper is expected to be considered for future Super Eagles squads as the team continues preparations for upcoming competitions, including the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
