The Federal Government has given fresh hope to students across Nigeria, saying the era of constant university strikes may finally be over.
Speaking at an event in Lagos, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, said the government has successfully resolved its long-standing dispute with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) through the 2025 agreement.
He explained that the agreement includes a 40% salary increase for lecturers, improved pension packages, and a stronger commitment to funding universities. According to him, many institutions have already begun paying the new salaries, even before the full implementation of the 2026 budget.
Alausa dismissed recent rumours of another strike as false, reassuring students and parents that universities and polytechnics will remain open and academic activities will continue without interruption.
He also revealed that discussions with the Non-Academic Staff Union are almost complete, and an agreement will soon be signed to ensure all staff members are carried along.
The minister emphasized that the government’s priority is to keep students in school and avoid the disruptions that have affected academic progress in the past.
Under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, the government says it is committed to bringing lasting stability to the education sector and restoring confidence in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
