Nigerian sprint sensation Ella Onojuvwevwo has produced a stunning world-leading performance, clocking 49.59 seconds to win the women’s 400m at the Battle on the Bayou meet in Louisiana on Saturday.
The 20-year-old LSU star became the first Nigerian woman in 27 years to break the 50-second barrier outdoors — the last to do so was Falilat Ogunkoya with 49.52s back in 1998. Onojuvwevwo’s time now stands as the fastest by any Nigerian woman since that date and ranks her seventh on the African all-time list and fourth on Nigeria’s all-time performers list.
Competing for Louisiana State University, the youngster dominated the race from the gun. She surged clear in the first 200 metres and maintained her powerful stride all the way to the finish line, setting a new LSU record, the 2026 NCAA season lead, and the 10th-fastest time in NCAA history.
The performance caps a remarkable start to her 2026 outdoor season. Just weeks earlier, Onojuvwevwo had smashed the African indoor 400m record with 50.28s at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March, making her the fastest woman in the world over one lap both indoors and outdoors this year.
Onojuvwevwo’s explosive form has firmly established her as one of the brightest young stars in global sprinting. With the 2026 season still young, the Nigerian talent is already positioning herself as a serious contender for major titles later in the year.
