A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olabode George, has raised alarm over what he described as a coordinated attempt by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to weaken Nigeria’s democracy and impose a one-party state.
George alleged that recent actions and pronouncements by both the APC and INEC suggest a deliberate effort to sideline opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections. He claimed that the developments point to a broader agenda to ensure that only one dominant political force remains in the country’s democratic space.
The PDP elder warned that such tendencies threaten the core principles of democracy, including fairness, transparency, and political plurality. Drawing historical parallels, he cautioned that undermining opposition voices could destabilise the nation and erode public trust in democratic institutions.
He further criticised INEC, accusing the electoral body of abandoning its neutrality and acting in ways that appear to favour the ruling party. According to him, the commission’s involvement in political party disputes and its interpretation of legal matters raise serious concerns about its independence.
George also expressed dissatisfaction with the judiciary, alleging that certain judicial decisions have contributed to the weakening of democratic structures. He stressed that justice must be upheld without bias, warning that the misuse of legal technicalities could deepen political tensions in the country.
Calling on Nigerians and political leaders across party lines, he urged collective resistance against any attempt to erode democratic values, emphasising that maintaining a multi-party system remains essential to ensuring accountability, representation, and the long-term stability of Nigeria’s political system.
