At least 11 people have been confirmed dead, while more than 50 houses were set ablaze following a violent attack by suspected hoodlums on communities in Nasarawa State.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday in Akyawa and parts of Udege Kasa. The attackers were reportedly carrying out a reprisal over the alleged killing of two of their kinsmen.
Witnesses said the assailants stormed the communities, attacking residents and burning down homes, leaving many families displaced and in shock.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Nasarawa State Command, SP Ramhan Nansel, said the Commissioner of Police, Shetima Mohammed, visited the affected communities and expressed deep sorrow over the killings and destruction.
He assured residents that justice would be served, adding that the police have launched a manhunt for those responsible for the attack.
The police commissioner has also directed tactical teams and other security operatives to intensify operations in the area to track down the perpetrators and prevent further violence.
Security agencies, including the police, military, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), have been deployed to restore calm and maintain order in the affected communities.
Authorities urged residents to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies, and provide useful information that could aid ongoing investigations.
The police command also assured the public that normalcy has returned to the area, while efforts are ongoing to prevent a repeat of such attacks.
