The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Appeal Board has overturned the result of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final, declaring that Senegal forfeited the match against hosts Morocco.
The ruling, announced on March 17, 2026, awards Morocco a 3-0 victory and officially crowns them as champions. The decision stems from Senegal's team walking off the pitch in protest during the January final in Rabat, following a controversial late penalty awarded to Morocco via VAR.
According to the official CAF media statement “The Confédération Africaine de Football (“CAF”) Appeal Board decided that in application of Article 84 of the Regulations of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Senegal National Team is declared to have forfeited the Final Match of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025, with the result of the Match being recorded as 3–0 in favour of the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF).”
Morocco's Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF) lodged a successful appeal against an earlier CAF Disciplinary Board ruling, which had upheld Senegal's on-field win while imposing fines and bans on both sides for various incidents, including crowd behavior and player misconduct.
Senegal's football federation has condemned the decision as "unfair and unprecedented" and plans to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The move has divided opinions, with some viewing it as upholding rules and others as undermining the on-pitch result in one of African football's most dramatic finals. Morocco claims their first AFCON title since 1976 through this administrative decision.
