Veteran Nigerian actor Abiodun Ayoyinka, popularly known as Papa Ajasco, has opened up about years of severe financial struggles in a recent interview with media personality Lucky Udu.
The actor revealed that the "Papa Ajasco" character famous from the comedy series Papa Ajasco & Company produced by Wale Adenuga Productions has been trademarked and registered by the production company.
This legal restriction prevents him from using the name, costume, or persona independently for endorsements, advertisements, personal projects, or appearances, limiting his earning opportunities outside the show.
Ayoyinka explained that many potential deals specifically request him as the recognizable Papa Ajasco, but he must seek permission each time, making it difficult to capitalize on his fame.
He disclosed modest earnings of about ₦45,000 per episode (up from ₦22,500 in 1997), with only a limited number of episodes produced annually. After retiring from a civil service job five years ago, he said life has grown increasingly tough.
Ayoyinka confessed, “Since I retired five years ago, things have never been okay, I don’t have my own house. I don’t have a car.” The interview has struck a chord online, with many fans expressing sympathy and surprise that the man who brought so much laughter into their homes is facing such hardship.
He used the platform to appeal to supporters and the public, sharing his story in hopes of highlighting the realities many veteran entertainers face long after the spotlight fades.
