The National Bureau of Statistics has said that Nigeria spent about N9 trillion on petrol imports in 2025. According to the report, “motor spirit ordinary remained one of the most imported commodities throughout the year.”
The report showed that Nigeria still depends heavily on imported fuel, even though local refineries are now operating. It also revealed that more petrol was imported than what was produced in the country. This is happening despite the operations of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and other local refineries that were expected to reduce imports.
Experts say this situation can affect the economy because it puts pressure on the country’s finances. They also said problems like crude oil supply and distribution are affecting local production. Nigeria imports petrol from countries like the Netherlands, Brazil, and the United States.Experts believe that improving local refining will help Nigeria reduce its dependence on imported petrol.
