The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has submitted an appeal to FIFA following the rejection of its petition against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) concerning the eligibility of players used in their 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff match.
The playoff encounter between Nigeria's Super Eagles and DR Congo's Leopards took place on November 16, 2025, in Rabat, Morocco, with DR Congo advancing after a penalty shootout victory. Shortly after the match, the NFF submitted a formal petition to FIFA, alleging irregularities in the issuance of passports that allowed several DR Congo players to qualify for the fixture, claiming this constituted a breach of eligibility rules and potential fraud.
FIFA's Disciplinary Committee reviewed the petition and rejected it, prompting the NFF to initiate an appeal process immediately. If FIFA rules in Nigeria's favor, it might result in severe penalties for DR Congo, such as match forfeiture, points deductions, or other sanctions that could alter the qualification mathematics.
The appeal remains pending, with FIFA yet to issue a final ruling on the eligibility dispute. Nigerian football supporters continue to hold out hope for a reprieve that could revive the Super Eagles' chances of securing a spot at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
