Hope For Nigeria

by Emmanuel Uduak-Obong Esther

Can head lie when
His house is ablaze?
Can feet see light
When his paths are cursed?

When shall eyes wake up
From the sleep of fear?
When shall hands
Pull down this deadly waving spear?

Are we not tired
Of running helter-skelter?
Are we not tired
Of living in bondage of freedom?

Why have we sent unity
On a journey of no return?
Why have our selfish desires
Stolen the best of us?

Should we speak of promises
Which after the season
Become empty words
And a loss to the masses?

Or should we speak of hardship,
Rising prices, and struggles
That daily test the strength
Of ordinary citizens?

But, our mindsets have wounded us
Even more than we admit
For sometimes we lose hope
Even before the journey begins.

Nigeria has become a dwarf
And has lost her name, Giant,
To greed, disunity, selfishness,
Indiscipline, bribery, and corruption.

But, Nathan asked, can any good
Thing come out of Nazareth?
Now, can any good thing
Come out of Nigeria?

Surely it can, but on the day
A new sun of thoughts will shine
With stars of a different mindset
In a sky of unity and good morals.

A new Nigeria will come
When we begin to filter our thoughts
Towards our fellow Nigerians
And embrace everyone in love.

A new Nigeria will sparkle when
We realize that we are Nigeria,
Not merely the resources
That the land was blessed with.

Nigeria can become better
When we choose wisdom
And act with conscience
For the sake of tomorrow.

Nigeria, we hail thee,
Our own dear native land,
Though tribe and tongue may differ,
In brotherhood we stand.

Our flag shall be a symbol
That truth and justice reign,
In peace or battle honoured,
And this we count as gain.

O God of all creation,
Grant this our one request,
Help us to build a nation
Where no man is oppressed.

To hand on to our children
A banner without stain.
And so with peace and plenty
Nigeria may be blessed.

The Tomorrow trap: why we procrastinate and how to break free

By Irikefe Oghenetega Victor It’s 11 p.m. in Lagos, and that major project due at 9 a.m.  is staring back at you from your laptop screen. Yet somehow, the work hasn’t started. Instead, you’re rearranging your playlist to create the “perfect” study vibe, finally replying to that group chat message from last week, or falling down an unexpected rabbit hole about why ancient Roman aqueducts were such a brilliant engineering feat. The minutes slip by. The clock seems to tick louder. A quiet sense of guilt begins to creep in, but the scrolling continues. For many university students, this cycle is all too familiar , an endless tug-of-war between looming deadlines and the irresistible distractions of the digital world. You're not lazy. You're human. Procrastination isn't a willpower deficit or a time-management glitch, it's an emotional rescue mission gone sideways. Modern psychology, led by researchers like Timothy Pychyl and Fuschia Sirois, frames it clearly: procrastinati...
