ADC Adopts Consensus Strategy as PDP Intensifies Search for Presidential Candidate

By Enakaye Peculiar

Nigeria’s opposition landscape is beginning to take shape ahead of the 2027 general elections, as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) moves toward a consensus approach while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) steps up efforts to identify a strong presidential candidate.

Recent developments within both parties suggest a renewed determination to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which currently dominates the political space across most states. Party leaders and stakeholders are increasingly focused on unity, coalition-building, and strategic positioning to present a formidable alternative in the next election cycle.

A major boost to the ADC came with the planned defection of former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, alongside his Kwankwasiyya Movement. The move is expected to strengthen the party’s grassroots support, particularly in the northern region, while signaling a broader realignment among opposition forces.

The ADC’s consensus strategy is seen as an attempt to avoid internal divisions and present a united front. Political observers believe that ongoing talks involving key figures such as Peter Obi, Seyi Makinde, and others could reshape the opposition’s structure and influence the party’s eventual presidential ticket.

Meanwhile, the PDP is focusing on internal reconciliation and candidate selection as it prepares for its national convention. Party leaders have emphasized unity and inclusiveness, urging aggrieved members to return and contribute to rebuilding efforts.

As political realignments continue, analysts say the coming months will be critical in determining whether the opposition can consolidate its gains and present a viable challenge in 2027.
